CHARLOTTESVILLE – No. 14 Virginia beat in-state rival No. 44 VCU 6-1 Friday (Jan. 31) at the Boyd Tinsley Courts at the Boar’s Head Sports Club. Virginia improved to 2-0 by winning the doubles point and five of six singles matches.

The Cavaliers claimed the doubles point with wins at Nos. 1 and 3. No. 8 Julia Elbaba (Oyster Bay, N.Y.) and Rachel Pierson (Princeton, N.J.) beat Cindy Chala and Ludivine Burguiere 6-3 at No. 1. Sophomores Stephanie Nauta (Galveston, Texas) and Maci Epstein (Winter Park, Fla.) clinched the point with a 6-3 win over VCU’s Olga Terteac and Salome Kvitashvili at No. 3.

No. 43 Pierson gave the Cavaliers a 2-0 lead with a 6-1, 6-2 over Burguiere at No. 3. No. 85 Nauta made it 3-0 with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Kvitashvili at No. 4. Epstein clinched the win with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Olga Barscheuskaya at No. 5.

No. 11 Elbaba defeated Chala 6-1, 6-2 at No. 1 singles and No. 28 Danielle Collins (St. Petersburg, Fla.) added a 6-4, 6-4 win over No. 81 Yukako Noi at No. 2

Li Xi (Kunming, China) dropped a 4-6, 6-0, 10-7 decision to Daria Yakauleva at No. 6.

The Cavaliers host No. 33 South Carolina on Sunday at Noon.
