BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia track and field teams returned to action Friday night with the start of the “Doc” Hale Virginia Tech Elite Meet at the Rector Field House. The Cavaliers took on a strong field that includes two ranked men’s teams and three top-10 women’s teams.
Friday’s action included several season-best performances by the Cavaliers, highlighted by the men’s and women’s mile races.
“Overall, I was disappointed in our attitude and engagement today,” said head coach Bryan Fetzer. “It showed in our performances. It’s the first time this year that we lacked in those areas. Every opportunity is a chance for learning and growth. We need to take a lesson from this one and make a change for tomorrow’s competition.”
In the men’s mile, Mike Marsella (Hope Valley, R.I.) ran 4:03.18, the sixth-fastest time in school history and the second-fastest mark by a Cavalier freshman. Henry Wynne (Westport, Conn.) ran the fourth-fastest time by a freshman, posting a time of 4:05.29.
Barbara Strehler (Richmond, Va.) finished second in the women’s mile, posting a time of 4:51.97, less than a second off her personal best.
The meet concludes Saturday at the Rector Field House. Field events will begin at 11 a.m., and running events start at 1 p.m.
