Virginia Falls at USC Upstate, 6-1

SPARTANBURG, S.C.—The Virginia softball team fell at USC Upstate, 6-1, Saturday (Feb. 8) on the second day of the Upstate Classic at Cyrill Stadium. The Cavaliers fell to 1-2 on the season, while the Spartans improved to 3-0.
Virginia scored its only run in the seventh inning, as freshman Lindsay Mayer (Lincoln, R.I.) came home on a sacrifice fly by senior Marcy Bowdren (Fairfax Station, Va.).
The Spartans scored five runs in the first two innings against UVa sophomore pitcher Aimee Chapdelaine (Pembroke Pines, Fla.), including a two-run home run in the first by Shellie Robinson, who finished 3-for-3 with four RBI.
Chapdelaine (1-2) settled down after the first two innings, giving up just one hit in the next to innings to finish with six hits allowed in four innings of work. Mayer allowed one run in two innings of relief.
Lexi Shubert (1-0) allowed just one unearned run in seven innings with nine strikeouts for the win for Upstate.
The Upstate Classic concludes Sunday (Feb. 9) as the Cavaliers will face off against Youngstown State at 2:30 p.m. before playing USC Upstate again at 4:30 p.m. The game against Upstate will be streamed live for free on ASun.TV.
