Virginia Drops Two Games at Upstate Classic

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Virginia softball team (1-4) dropped the final two games in the Upstate Classic Tournament at Cyrill Stadium in Spartanburg, S.C., falling 10-2 to Youngstown State (2-2) and losing 8-0 in a five-inning perfect game against USC Upstate (5-0).
Senior Marcy Bowdren (Fairfax Station, Va.) was named to the All-Tournament team, leading the team with four hits, including a triple and a home run, in the season-opening tournament.
In the first game of the day, Virginia lost 10-2 in five innings to Youngstown State. The Penguins loaded the bases in the second inning, plating five runs. In the third inning, freshman Iyana Hughes (Manteca, Calif.) walked and then stole second base, scoring on a single to left field from junior Megan Harris (Knoxville, Tn.). After a four-run third inning from Youngstown State, freshman Katie Park (Scottsdale, Ariz.) scored on a single from Bowdren. The Penguins ended the game with a solo home run from Kayla Haslett, her first of the season.
Haslett, who was also the starting pitcher, earned the win, improving to 1-0 on the season. Sophomore Aimee Chapdelaine took the loss, allowing 10 runs (eight earned) on six hits with five walks and no strikeouts in 4.1 innings.
USC Upstate did not allow a Cavalier to reach base in an 8-0 five-inning perfect game. The Spartans’ Hannah Alexander struck out six of the 15 UVa batters she faced. Chapdelaine (1-4) took the loss, pitching one-plus innings, allowing three runs, all earned, on one hit (a solo home run), walking two and striking out one. Bowdren worked three-plus innings of relief, allowing five runs on 10 hits, walking two.
Virginia will return to action next weekend, playing in the UNCG Tournament in Greensboro, N.C. taking on Radford and UNCG on Saturday, Feb. 15 and facing both teams again on Sunday, Feb. 16.
