Virginia Wins Nine Events on First Day of Cavalier Invite

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.—Virginia’s men’s and women’s swimmers completed action on the first day of the Cavalier Invite Friday (Feb. 14) at the Aquatic and Fitness Center.
In the 500 free, senior Hillary Petersen (Gainesville, Fla.) won the women’s race in 4:50.81, while freshman Maddy Smart (Brookfield, Conn.) was second in 4:51.15. Junior Sophomore Greg Stoffa (Manassas, Va.) claimed the men’s race in 4:29.68.
Freshman Audrey Gould (Bethesda, Md.) won the women’s 100 breast in a time of 1:02.66, tied for the eighth-fastest mark on UVa’s all-time list.
Virginia went 1-2 in the women’s 200 back, with junior Emily Dicus (Topeka, Kan.) finishing ahead of senior Riley Flanagan (Gainesville, Fla.), 1:57.61-1:59.13. Junior Charlie Putnam (McLean, Va.) won the men’s race in 1:48.63.
Freshman Shannon Rauth (Glenmoore, Pa.) led a UVa 1-2-3 sweep in the women’s 100 free in 49.48, the seventh-fastest time on Virginia’s all-time list. Senior Jane Munro (Evanston, Ill.) and sophomore Samantha James (Kenilworth, Ill.) placed second (50.20) and third (50.72), respectively.
The Cavalier men also finished 1-2-3 in the 100 free with senior Fred Crawford (Arlington, Va.) winning in 45.72, ahead of freshmen Adam Whitener (Saline, Mich.) and Barry Mangold (Rockville, Md.) in 45.81 and 45.87, respectively.
The women had another sweep in the 200 fly with freshman Erin McElfresh (Moravia, N.Y.) touching first in 1:59.46, with Flanagan and sophomore Rachel Moore (Andover, Mass.) were second and third.
In the men’s 200 fly, freshman Zach Bunner (Marietta, Ga.) claimed the win in 1:46.58, while classmate John Denning (Chesapeake, Va.) was second in 1:47.80.
The action continues Saturday (Feb. 15) with the 200 medley relay, 400 IM, 200 free, 100 fly, 200 breast, 100 back, 50 free, 1650 free and 400 free relay will be contested on Saturday.
