Virginia Falls to Purdue, Coastal Carolina

CONWAY, S.C.—The Virginia softball dropped a pair of games Saturday (Feb. 15), falling 13-3 in five innings to Purdue and 9-1 in five innings to host Coastal Carolina. The Cavaliers fell to 1-6 on the season.
Against the host Chanticleers (5-1), Virginia got an early lead after senior Stephanie Harris (Knoxville, Tenn.) led off the game with a single and came home to score on an RBI double by fellow senior Marcy Bowdren (Fairfax Station, Va.).
Coastal Carolina spread out its nine runs, scoring two or more in four separate innings. Sophomore Aimee Chapdelaine (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) allowed six runs (four earned) in 3.1 innings in the loss to fall to 1-6 on the campaign. Bowdren gave up three runs in relief.
Kiana Quolas went 2-for-3 with three RBI to lead the Chanticleers, while Ashley Bagwell (1-0) pitched a complete game, allowing a run in five innings with three strikeouts for the win.
In the first game, Purdue (3-3-1) scored six runs in the second inning on the way to a 13-3 victory over the Cavaliers in five innings.
Harris and Bowdren each hit solo home runs, while freshman Katie Park (Scottsdale, Ariz.) drove in classmate Madison Labshere (El Cajon, Calif.) for UVa’s other run.
Chapdelaine allowed 10 runs (six earned) in four innings of work with two strikeouts. Freshman Lindsay Mayer (Lincoln, R.I.) gave up three runs in an inning of relief.
Andie Varsho went 3-for-3 with three runs scored, while Ashley Burkhardt went 2-for-3 with four RBI to lead the Boilermakers. Lilly Fecho (2-1) pitched the complete game, striking out seven in five innings for the win.
The Cavaliers return to action Sunday (Feb. 16) when they play Towson at noon.
