Virginia Wins 11 Events on Final Day of Cavalier Invite

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.—Virginia’s men’s and women’s swimmers picked up 11 event wins on the final day of the Cavalier Invitational Saturday (Feb. 15) at the Aquatic and Fitness Center.
Senior Hillary Petersen (Gainesville, Va.) touched first in the women’s 400 IM in a time of 4:21.06. The Cavaliers went 1-2 in the men’s race with freshman Robert Leasure (Louisville, Ky.) winning in 3:56.64, ahead of junior Charlie Putnam (McLean, Va.) in 3:58.02.
In the women’s 200 free, sophomore Samantha James (Keniworth, Ill.) posted a time of 1:49.60 for the win, with freshman Maddy Smart (Brookfield, Conn.) second in 1:51.45. Freshman Barry Mangold (Rockville, Md.) claimed the men’s race in 1:40.18.
Sophomore Rachel Moore (Andover, Mass.) out-touched freshman Erin McElfresh (Moravia, N.Y.) in the women’s 100 fly, 54.31-54.43 for first and second, respectively. Freshman Adam Whitener (Saline, Mich.) won the men’s 100 fly in 48.50.
In the women’s 200 breast, freshman Audrey Gould (Bethesda, Md.) won in a time 2:18.24.
The Cavaliers went 1-2-3 in the women’s 100 back with junior Emily Dicus (Topeka, Kan. – 54.52) and seniors Jane Munro (Evanston, Ill. – 54.67) and Riley Flanagan (Gainesville, Fla. – 55.44).
In the men’s 100 back, freshman Zach Bunner (Marietta, Ga.) won in a time of 48.09, the 10th-fastest time on UVa’s all-time list. Putnam and freshman John Denning (Chesapeake, Va.) finished the sweep in 50.11 and 50.49, respectively.
Freshman Shannon Rauth (Glenmoore, Pa.) won the women’s 50 free in 22.96, while senior Dana Nessler (Jacksonville, Fla.) was second in 23.24.
Junior Greg Stoffa (Manassas, Va.) won the men’s 1,650 free in a time of 15:34.41.
Next up for the Cavaliers will be the ACC Championships, which will be held in Greensboro, N.C. The women’s meet, along with men’s diving, will be held Feb. 19-22, while the men’s swimming meet is the following week Feb. 26-March 1.
