CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif.—The Virginia softball team fell to Oregon State, 9-1 in five innings, Friday night (Feb. 21) at the Mary Nutter Classic. With the loss, the Cavaliers fell to 2-9 on the season, while the Beavers improved to 4-10.
UVa scored its only run in the fourth inning after junior Heidi Velk (Murietta, Calif.) singled and stole second to lead off the inning. Velk scored on a freshman Madison Labshere (El Cajon, Calif.) single.
Alexis Gonzalez went 3-for-3 with two RBI for the Beavers, who scored five runs in the fifth inning with one out to end the game. Amanda Najdek (2-4) pitched a complete game, allowing a run with four strikeouts in five innings for the win.
Sophomore pitcher Aimee Chapdelaine (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) allowed nine runs (eight earned) in 4.1 innings in the loss (2-9).
The Cavaliers conclude the Mary Nutter Classic Saturday (Feb. 22) when they play Fresno State at 3 p.m. and Oregon at 5:30 p.m. Both times are Eastern.
