RALEIGH, N.C.—The Virginia softball team dropped a pair of games at NC State, 3-0 and 5-2, to open 2014 ACC play Saturday (March 1) at Dail Softball Stadium.
With the losses, the Cavaliers fell to 2-13 (0-2 ACC) on the season, while the Wolfpack improved to 7-6 (2-0 ACC) on the year.
In the first game, Virginia earned only five hits against NC State pitcher Emily Weiman (7-5), including two by freshman Lindsay Mayer (Lincoln, R.I.).
Renada Davis led off the first inning for NC State with a home run to center and singled home Chelsea Tate in the sixth inning for the Wolfpack’s third run. Hanna Sommer drove home Lana Van Dyken in the fifth for NC State’s other run.
Sophomore pitcher Aimee Chapdelaine (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) allowed three runs on four hits in five innings of work, but fell to 2-11 on the season. Mayer came on and pitched a scoreless sixth inning in relief.
In the second game, Mayer (0-2) made her first collegiate pitching start and allowed five runs (four earned) in a complete game, but Wolfpack were victorious, 5-2.
The Cavaliers did not record a hit against Weiman until the seventh inning when freshman Iyana Hughes (Manteca, Calif.) singled to lead off the inning. Hughes moved to third on a single by fellow freshman Madison Labshere (El Cajon, Calif.) and both scored on a single to center by senior Stephanie Harris (Knoxville, Tenn.).
NC State only mustered five hits against Mayer, but two were home runs, a solo shot by Tate in the second and two-run long ball in the sixth inning. Weiman pitched a complete game for the Wolfpack, striking out four.
The two teams conclude the three-game series Sunday (March 2) at noon.
