No. 3 Virginia Handles Syracuse 6-1

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – No. 3 Virginia defeated Syracuse 6-1 in ACC women’s tennis action Saturday (March 1) at Drumlins Tennis Center.
The Cavaliers improved to 8-2, 3-0 ACC with their third straight win, while Syracuse fell to 1-8, 1-3 ACC.
Virginia won the doubles point and received singles wins from Maci Epstein (Winter Park, Fla.), Stephanie Nauta (Galveston, Texas), Julia Elbaba (Oyster Bay, N.Y.), Danielle Collins (St. Petersburg, Fla.) and Marie Faure (Toulouse, France).
The Cavaliers collected their second consecutive doubles sweep. Nauta and Epstein defeated Olivia Messineo and Amanda Rodgers 8-2 at No. 3. UVa clinched the point when Collins and Li Xi (Kunming, China) beat Komal Safdar and Rhiann Newborn 8-3 at No. 2. No. 7 Elbaba and Rachel Pierson (Princeton, N.J.) added an 8-6 win over Valeria Salazar and Maddie Kobelt at No. 1.
Epstein made it 2-0 with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Safdar at No. 5 singles. No. 42 Nauta made it 3-0 with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Salazar at No. 4. No. 4 Elbaba clinched the Virginia win for the third straight match, posting a 6-3, 6-3 win over Kobelt at No. 1.
No. 58 Collins added a 6-2, 3-6, 10-5 win over Rodgers at No. 2 and Faure posted a 6-1, 6-7, 10-5 win over Maria Avgerinos at No. 6.
Syracuse scored its lone point at No. 3 singles as Rhiann Newborn upset No. 47 Pierson 7-6, 6-2.
The Cavaliers return home to host No. 11 North Carolina and Maryland on March 8-9 at Snyder Tennis Center.
