RALEIGH, N.C.—The Virginia softball team dropped the finale of a three-game series at NC State, 9-1 in five innings, Sunday (March 2) at Dail Softball Stadium. The Cavaliers fell to 2-14 (0-3 ACC), while the Wolfpack improved to 8-6 (3-0 ACC).
The Cavaliers’ lone run came on a second-inning home run by freshman Katie Park (Scottsdale, Ariz.), the first of her collegiate career. Fellow freshman Iyana Hughes (Manteca, Calif.) added two hits.
The Wolfpack broke open the game with six runs in third inning and ended the game in the fifth on back-to-back home runs by Sara Lippard and Chelsea Tate.
Sophomore pitcher Aimee Chapdelaine (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) allowed six runs (two earned) in three innings in the loss (2-12), while freshman Lindsay Mayer (Lincoln, R.I.) gave up three runs in 1.1 innings of relief.
Emily Weiman (8-5) picked up the win for NC State, giving up one run on four hits with four strikeouts in five innings of work.
The Cavaliers open their home schedule next weekend (March 8-9) when they host Florida State. Saturday’s doubleheader is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start, while Sunday’s single game is slated for an 11 a.m. start.
