CHARLOTTESVILLE – No. 5 Virginia bounced back from yesterday’s loss to No. 12 North Carolina by posting a 7-0 win over Maryland in Atlantic Coast Conference women’s tennis action Sunday (March 9) at Snyder Tennis Center.
Virginia (9-3, 4-1 ACC) won the doubles point and received singles wins from Julia Elbaba (Oyster Bay, N.Y.), Danielle Collins (St. Petersburg, Fla.), Stephanie Nauta (Galveston, Texas), Rachel Pierson (Princeton, N.J.), Li Xi (Kunming, China) and Caryssa Peretz (Cherry Hill, N.J.).
The Cavaliers started fast by winning the doubles point. Nauta and Epstein beat Olivia Gaudreault and Alexandra Stanova 8-3 at No. 2 and Elbaba and Pierson defeated Kristina Hovsepyan and Welma Luus 8-2 at No. 1. Collins and Xi led Nataliya and Olga Bredikhina 7-2 on court three when the point was clinched.
Virginia posted six consecutive singles wins to complete the shutout. Pierson beat Luus 6-3, 6-4 at No. 4 and Xi beat Olga Bredikhina 6-1, 6-2 at No. 5. Collins beat Hovsepyan 6-3, 6-3 at No. 2 and Nauta beat Nataliya Bredikhina 6-2, 2-6, 10-3 at No. 3. Peretz defeated Olga Gaistruk 4-6, 6-2, 12-10 at No. 6 and Elbaba beat Stanova 6-2, 6-4 at No. 1.
The Cavaliers return to action at Georgia on Wednesday, March 12.
