UVa Men's Golfers Finish Second at Palmetto Intercollegiate

Aiken, S.C. – The No. 7 Virginia men’s golf team opened the spring portion of its schedule with an impressive second-place finish at the Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate in Aiken, S.C. The Cavaliers shot 279 during Tuesday’s final round of play for a 54-hole of 16-over 856. Clemson bettered the Cavaliers by two strokes to win the team title in the 18-school field.
Freshman Derek Bard paced Virginia with a runner-up finish, shooting 1-over 211, to record the best finish in his Cavalier career. Bard had rounds of 72, 69 and 70 to record his second top-five finish in three collegiate appearances.
Virginia All-American Denny McCarthy posted the team’s best final-round score, shooting 3-under 67, to finish in fourth place at 3-over 213. McCarthy, a candidate for the Hogan Award presented to the nation’s top collegiate golfer, posted the 11th top-10 finish in his career. It was the fourth time in five tournaments this year that McCarthy posted a top-five performance.
Ben Rush shot 1-under 69 during Tuesday’s play to move up to 14th place, finishing with a score of 217. Nick McLaughlin was 31st at 222 and Jimmy Stanger was 38th at 223.
Clemson’s Austin Langdale took medalist honors at even par 210.
The Cavaliers will wrap up their spring break trip by competing at the Chris Schenkel Invitational in Statesboro, Ga., starting Friday.
