No. 5 Virginia Falls 4-3 at No. 12 Georgia

ATHENS, Ga. – No. 12 Georgia edged No. 5 Virginia 4-3 in non-conference women’s tennis action Wednesday (March 12) at Dan Magill Tennis Complex, site of the 2014 NCAA Championships.
Virginia falls to 9-4 with the loss, while Georgia improves to 10-2 with the win. Freshman Rachel Pierson (Princeton, N.J.) and sophomores Maci Epstein (Winter Park, Fla.) and Danielle Collins (St. Petersburg, Fla.) posted singles wins in the loss for Virginia.
The Bulldogs won the doubles point with victories at Nos. 2 and 1. No. 36 Kate Fuller and Silvia Garcia defeated No. 41 Epstein and Stephanie Nauta (Galveston, Texas) 8-4 on court two and No. 3 Lauren Herring and Maho Kowase beat No. 9 Julia Elbaba (Oyster Bay, N.Y.) and Pierson 8-6 on court one.
Pierson tied the score at 1-1 with a 6-1, 6-1 win over No. 45 Lilly Kimbell on court four. No. 10 Herring regained the lead for Georgia with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Elbaba on court one. No. 15 Garcia rallied in a 3-6, 6-3, 6-0 win over No. 47 Nauta on court three, but Virginia tied the match at 2-2 with Epstein’s 6-2, 6-4 win over Fuller on court five.
No. 67 Collins earned a hard-fought 7-6, 2-6, 6-4 win over No. 21 Kowase on court two, but Mia King clinched the Georgia win with a 7-6, 6-2 win over Li Xi (Kunming, China) on court six.
The Cavaliers return to action at No. 13 Michigan on Friday, March 14.
