Virginia Drops Pair of Games Against Syracuse

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.–The Virginia softball team dropped two games against ACC newcomer Syracuse, 8-0 and 13-1, Saturday afternoon (March 15) at The Park. The Cavaliers fell to 3-20 (1-9 ACC), while the Orange improved 9-14 (2-3 ACC).
In the second game, the Orange stuck for seven in the first inning en route to a five-inning 13-1 win. Mary Dombrowski, Alyssa Dewes and pitcher Sydney O’Hara each had three RBI for Syracuse. O’Hara (7-5) pitched four innings, allowing one run with four strikeouts for the win.
Sophomore Heidi Velk (Murrieta, Calif.) led off the first for the Cavaliers with a long home run to right-center field for Virginia’s only run. It was Velk’s second home run of the season.
Sophomore Aimee Chapdelaine (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) allowed four runs in a third of an inning in the loss (3-18). Freshman Lindsay Mayer (Lincoln, R.I.) pitched 4.2 innings of relief, allowing nine runs (eight earned).
In the first game, O’Hara threw a one-hit shutout and added a two-run home run for Syracuse as the Orange went on to win, 8-0, in five innings. O’Hara struck out seven in five innings of work. Mayer had the only hit for the Cavaliers.
Chapdelaine took the loss, allowing eight runs (seven earned) in five innings.
The two teams finish the three-game series Sunday (March 16), with first pitch scheduled for noon.
