CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.–The Virginia softball team split a pair of games against Fordham Thursday afternoon (March 20) at The Park. The Cavaliers (4-22) won the first game, 9-2, but fell in the second game, 8-2, to the Rams (13-15).
In the first game, Virginia used two four-run innings to break open the game. Junior Heidi Velk (Murrieta, Calif.) had two hits and three RBI, while senior Marcy Bowdren (Fairfax Station, Va.) and freshman Iyana Hughes (Manteca, Calif.) each drove in two runs.
Sophomore pitcher Aimee Chapdelaine (Pembroke Pines, Calif.) pitched 4.2 innings for the win, allowing two runs (one earned) with two strikeouts. Freshman Lindsay Mayer (Lincoln, R.I.) threw 2.1 innings of scoreless relief.
Michele Daubman (7-8) took the loss, allowing four runs in two innings of work.
In the second game, Fordham’s Paige Ortiz hit a grand slam in the fourth inning to open up the game for the Rams, who went on to win, 8-2.
Chapdelaine (4-20) took the loss, allowing two runs in three innings of work, while Rachel Gillen (2-3) earned the win, pitching four innings with two runs allowed.
The Cavaliers return to action next Wednesday (March 19) for a doubleheader against George Mason at The Park. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
