Cavaliers Post Strong Performances in Raleigh and Austin

AUSTIN, Texas & RALEIGH, N.C. – The Virginia track and field teams concluded action at a pair of meets on Saturday. The Cavaliers had athletes compete at both the Texas Relays in Austin and the Raleigh Relays at NC State, finding success at both meets.

“We had a very productive weekend at both locations,” said head coach Bryan Fetzer. “Unfortunately the weather caused some issues at Raleigh, but that could happen at ACC’s, so we have to be prepared for it. Both of these meets will go along way to the development of the program. I look forward to having the whole team together next week for the tri-meet with Cal and Michigan.”

In Austin, the Cavaliers posted several performances that rank amongst the best in school history. Filip Mihaljevic (Livno, Bosnia and Herzegovina) threw a PR of 198-2 in the discus, the second best throw in school history. It broke the UVa freshman record he set last week by a foot.

The women’s 4x200m relay team finished eighth at the meet. The team of Peyton Chaney (Belleville, Ill.), Tori McKenzie (Chatham, Va.), Andrea Wright (Chesapeake, Va.) and Jordan Lavender (Nashville, Tenn.) posted a time of 1:36.25, the third fastest in school history.

The women’s 4x400m relay posted the third-best time in school history with a 3:37.40. The team of Wright, Lavender, Vanessa Fabrizio (Denver, Colo.) and Chimere Ezumah (Gardena, Calif.) finished fourth at the meet.

In Raleigh, the Cavaliers had several athletes in action as rain hampered the second day of the meet. Highlighting the day was Sarah DeVita (Ridgewood, N.J.), who placed second in the women’s pole vault with a PR of 11-5.75″. It was the fifth-best mark in school history.

Virginia will return home next weekend to host a tri-meet Saturday against Cal and Michigan. It is the second year of the meet, which was held last year in Berkeley.
