PITTSBURGH, Pa.–The Virginia softball team fell to ACC newcomer Pittsburgh, 10-2 and 9-4, Saturday (March 29) at Vartabedian Field. The Cavaliers dropped to 4-26 (1-12 ACC) on the season, while the Panthers (10-14, 2-5 ACC) picked up their first ever ACC wins.
In the first game, the Panthers hit four home runs en route to a 10-2 victory in five innings. The Cavaliers’ runs came in the first inning when freshman Madison Labshere (El Cajon, Calif.) drove in junior Heidi Velk (Murrieta, Calif.) and freshman Lindsay Mayer (Lincoln, R.I.) scored on a Pitt error.
Mayer (0-3) took the loss, allowing nine runs in four innings of work. Savannah King (6-10) earned the win for Pittsburgh, giving up two runs (one earned) with two strikeouts in a complete game.
In the second game, the Cavaliers scored three in the first inning, including a two-run double by senior Stephanie Harris (Knoxville, Tenn.), but Pitt hit a pair of two-run home runs in the fourth inning to break open the game on the way to a 9-4 win.
Bowdren (0-1) made her first collegiate pitching start, but took the loss in a complete game. Alexa Larkin (4-4) struck out seven in a complete game win for the Panthers.
Maggie Sevilla hit a two-run home run in each game and had a total of five RBI to lead Pitt.
The two teams conclude the series Sunday (March 30) at noon.
