Virginia Drops Two Games at Virginia Tech

BLACKSBURG, Va.—The Virginia softball team dropped a pair of games to in-state rival Virginia Tech, 8-2 and 6-0, Saturday afternoon (April 12) at Tech Softball Park. The Cavaliers fell to 6-34 (1-18 ACC), while the Hokies improved to 26-16 (15-6 ACC).
Virginia Tech used 11 hits to go on to an 8-2 win in the first game. After the Hokies took a 3-0 lead in the second inning, junior Megan Harris (Knoxville, Tenn.) singled to lead off the inning and senior Marcy Bowdren (Fairfax Station, Va.) hit her sixth home run of the season to cut the lead to 3-2. Bowdren reached base three times, earning a double and a walk later in the game.
Sophomore Aimee Chapdelaine (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) allowed eight runs (four earned) in six innings with four strikeouts in the loss. Kelly Heinz (14-11) allowed two runs in a complete-game win with six strikeouts.
In the second game, Virginia Tech scored five unearned runs in the fifth inning to break open the game en route to a 6-0 win. Bowdren went 2-for-3 in the second game to go 4-for-5 on the day.
Maggie Tyler (12-5) struck out 10 in seven innings while only allowing three hits in earning the win. Chapdelaine (6-28) allowed six runs (one earned) in six innings of work in the loss.
The two teams conclude the series Sunday (April 13) with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.
