Virginia Falls in Series Finale at Virginia Tech

BLACKSBURG, Va.—The Virginia softball team fell in the series finale to Virginia Tech, 11-3 in five innings, Sunday afternoon (April 13) at Tech Softball Park. With the loss, the Cavaliers dropped to 6-35 (1-19 ACC), while the Hokies improved to 27-16 (16-6 ACC).
The Cavaliers struck first with a run in the first, but the Hokies scored eight in the second inning to break open the game. Senior Marcy Bowdren (Fairfax Station, Va.) reached on an error in the top of the first and came around to score on a freshman Madison Labshere (El Cajon, Calif.) single for the UVa’s first run.
Virginia added two in the fifth when freshman Lindsay Mayer (Lincoln, R.I.) singled home sophomore Taylor Sarcone (Staten Island, N.Y.) and freshman Iyana Hughes (Manteca, Calif.) scored on a grounder by Labshere.
Maggie Tyler (13-5) picked up the win, allowing three runs (two earned) in five innings of work with five strikeouts. Sophomore Aimee Chapdelaine (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) took the loss, allowing four runs in 1.1 innings.
Up next, the Cavaliers host Notre Dame in a three-game series April 18-19. Friday evening’s doubleheader is scheduled for a 4 p.m. start, while Saturday’s first pitch is slated for noon. Saturday will be Senior Day and the Cavaliers’ three seniors will be recognized in a short ceremony before the game.
