TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The No. 9 Virginia women’s tennis team continued its winning ways with a 4-0 win at No. 44 Florida State in Atlantic Coast Conference action Friday (April 18) at FSU’s Indoor Tennis Facility.
Virginia extended its school record with its ninth consecutive win, improving its overall record to 18-4 and school-best 12-1 mark in the ACC. Florida State dropped to 13-11, 5-8. The Cavaliers wrap up the regular season at No. 15 Miami (16-4, 10-2 ACC) on Sunday (April 20). A win over the Hurricanes would assure the Cavaliers of at least a share of their first ACC regular-season title in school history.
The Cavaliers won the doubles point and No. 50 Stephanie Nauta (Galveston, Texas), No. 3 Julia Elbaba (Oyster Bay, N.Y.) and Maci Epstein (Winter Park, Fla.) earned singles victories.
Virginia claimed the doubles point with wins at Nos. 2 and 3. Nauta and Li Xi (Kunming, China) beat Duda Santos and Majlena Pedersen 8-2 on court two. No. 11 Elbaba and Rachel Pierson (Princeton, N.J.) suffered an 8-5 loss to No. 58 Daneika Borthwick and Kerrie Cartwright on court one, but Danielle Collins (St. Petersburg, Fla.) and Epstein clinched the point with an 8-5 win over Kristina Schleich and Daniela Schippers on court three.
Nauta won by retirement at No. 3, giving Virginia a 2-0 lead. Elbaba beat No. 117 Cartwright 6-2, 6-1 on court one before Epstein clinched the win with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Schleich on court five.
Pierson was up one set over Schippers on court 4 when Epstein clinched, but Collins (court 2) and Caryssa Peretz (court 6) were down one set each in their matches.
