CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.–The Virginia softball team fell in both games of a doubleheader to No. 22 Notre Dame, 8-0 and 12-1, Friday (April 18) at The Park. With the losses, the Cavaliers fell to 6-37 (1-21 ACC), while the Fighting Irish improved to 28-9 (8-4 ACC).
In the second game, the Irish scored seven in the third inning to break open the game en route to a 12-1 win in five innings. The Cavaliers scored in the third when junior Heidi Velk (Murrieta, Calif.) singled and stole second, her 13th steal of the season. She came home on a single by freshman Lindsay Mayer (Lincoln, R.I.).
Karley Wester was 3-for-4 with three runs batted in to lead Notre Dame, while Katey Haus added three RBI.
Rachel Nasland (5-1) picked up the win for the Irish, allowing one run in three innings of relief with five strikeouts. Sophomore pitcher Aimee Chapdelaine (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) threw a complete game in the loss.
In the first game, Notre Dame’s Laura Winter (17-4) threw a perfect game with nine strikeouts, as the Irish defeated the Cavaliers, 8-0, in five innings.
The Irish scored five in the first, including a three-run home run by Winter. Cassidy Whidden added a two-run home run for Notre Dame in the fifth.
Chapdelaine (6-31) threw a complete game, allowing eight runs (seven earned) with two strikeouts.
The two teams conclude the three-game series Saturday (April 19) with first pitch scheduled for noon. Before the game, the Cavaliers will hold a brief senior ceremony.
