Virginia Concludes Unbeaten ACC Season with 7-0 Win at Virginia Tech

BLACKSBURG, Va. – The fourth-ranked Virginia men’s tennis team closed out its regular season schedule Saturday with a 7-0 victory over No. 36 Virginia Tech at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center. With the victory, the Cavaliers went undefeated through the ACC regular season for the eighth consecutive year. Virginia (20-2, 11-0 ACC) ran its overall winning streak to 11 matches, while the Hokies conclude the regular season at 13-10 (5-6 ACC)
“I cannot be any happier than I am with how well we are preparing and competing as a team,” said head coach Brian Boland. “I feel great about where we are at this point in the season and as we continue to develop with each practice and match, we are only getting better. We are humbled and honored to clinch another undefeated ACC regular season. This league is such a challenge with the number of quality teams, year-in and year-out. We look forward to the ACC Tournament next week. It will be a great tournament and will help prepare us for the NCAA Tournament.”
The Cavaliers took a 1-0 lead by winning a close doubles point. Mitchell Frank (Annandale, Va.) and Thai-Son Kwiatkowski (Charlotte, N.C.) gave Virginia the early edge with an 8-5 win at No. 3 over Jai Corbett and Nic Wilson. The Hokies responded with an 8-5 win at No. 1, as Andreas Bjerrehus and Amerigo Contini downed Luca Corinteli (Alexandria, Va.) and Mac Styslinger (Birmingham, Ala.). The deciding match, at No. 2, came down to a tiebreaker, where Alex Domijan (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) and Harrison Richmond (Pawleys Island, S.C.) edged Hunter Koontz and Joao Monteiro 8-7(3) to clinch the opening point for the Cavaliers.
In singles, the Cavalier lead was extended to 2-0 as Justin Shane (Falls Church, Va.) posted a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 6 over Aaron Gomez. Domijan followed with a 7-5, 6-3 win at the No. 1 position over Contini. Ryan Shane (Falls Church, Va.) clinched the victory with his 6-0, 7-5 win at No. 3 over Koontz.
Kwiatkowski recorded a 6-2, 1-6, 6-3 win at No. 4 over Monteiro to extend the lead to 5-0. Frank rallied for a three-set win at No. 2, downing Bjerrehus 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 to make the score 6-0. In the final match on the courts, J.C. Aragone (Yorba Linda, Calif.) completed the shutout with a 7-5, 7-5 win at No. 5 over Corbett.
Virginia will begin postseason play next week at the ACC Tournament, held April 24-27 at the Cary Tennis Center in Cary, N.C. The Cavaliers will be the No. 1 seed and open play with a quarterfinal match on Friday after receiving a first round bye.
