CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.—The Virginia softball team fell on Senior Day, 15-8, to No. 22 Notre Dame Saturday afternoon (April 19) at The Park. The Cavaliers dropped to 6-38 (1-22 ACC), while the Fighting Irish improved to 29-9 (9-4 ACC).
Before the game, Virginia honored its three seniors, Marcy Bowdren (Fairfax Station, Va.), Stephanie Harris (Knoxville, Tenn.) and Karli Johnson (Lovettsville, Va.).
The Cavaliers did not show any quit down 12-0 in the fourth, striking for five runs. Freshman Lindsay Mayer (Lincoln, R.I.) doubled off the center-field wall, scoring junior Heidi Velk (Murrieta, Calif.). Freshman Madison Labshere (El Cajon, Calif.) doubled off the wall in left to score fellow freshman Katie Park (Scottsdale, Ariz.) and Mayer and junior Megan Harris (Knoxville, Tenn.) homered on the next pitch to cut the lead to 12-5. It was her first home run of the season.
In the fifth, the Cavaliers loaded the bases with no outs before Mayer walked to score Velk. Labshere followed with another walk to score freshman Iyana Hughes (Manteca, Calif.), but Notre Dame’s Allie Rhodes came in to the pitch and prevented the Cavaliers from scoring further.
Virginia scored their eighth run on another bases-loaded walk for Labshere that scored Hughes in the sixth.
Bowdren (0-4) took the loss, while Laura Winter (18-4) took the win, allowing five runs in 4.2 innings with six strikeouts.
Micaela Arizmendi went 5-for-5 with five RBI, while Cassidy Whidden drove in four runs to lead Notre Dame.
Up next, the Cavaliers conclude their 2014 home schedule with James Madison in a doubleheader on April 22 at 5 p.m. and Liberty in a twin bill on April 23 at 4 p.m.
