CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.—The Virginia softball team dropped a pair of games to in-state foe James Madison, 4-2 and 5-2, Tuesday (April 22) at The Park. The Cavaliers fell to 6-40 on the season, while the Dukes improved to 35-13.

In the second game, JMU’s Caitlin Sandy hit a first-inning grand slam as the Dukes went on to win, 5-2. Sophomore Aimee Chapdelaine (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) settled down after the first, allowing no hits in the final six innings while recording a career-high nine strikeouts.

In the third inning of the first game, freshman Iyana Hughes (Manteca, Calif.) singled and scored on a double down the left-field line by fellow freshman Katie Park (Scottsdale, Ariz.) to tie the game, 1-1.

JMU took the lead for good when Catherine Clavin hit a pinch-hit two-run double in the fourth inning. Ford (18-4) took the win after pitching 4.2 innings of scoreless relief. Chapdelaine (6-34) struck out four in the complete game loss.

The Cavaliers conclude their home schedule for the season Wednesday (April 23), when they host Liberty in a doubleheader scheduled for 4 p.m. at The Park. Admission is free to the public.
