CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.—The Virginia softball team closed out its 2014 home schedule with a sweep of Liberty Wednesday afternoon (April 23) at The Park. The Cavaliers (8-40) won the first game 3-1, before taking the second game, 13-3 in five innings, from the Flames (7-42).
In the bottom of the third of the first game, senior Karli Johnson (Lovettsville, Va.) scored on a Liberty error and fellow senior Marcy Bowdren (Fairfax Station, Va.) scored on the next play on an RBI groundout by freshman Iyana Hughes (Manteca, Calif.).
The Cavaliers added a run in the fourth when freshman Lindsay Mayer (Lincoln, R.I.) came home on a single by Johnson.
Sophomore pitcher Aimee Chapdelaine (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) threw a gem, allowing one run in seven innings with two strikeouts. Alyssa DiMartino (3-18) allowed three runs (one earned) in six innings in the loss.
In the second game, the Cavaliers scored four runs in the bottom of the first and Mayer went 3-for-3 with five RBI on the way to a 13-3 win in five innings.
UVa sent nine batters to the plate in the first, highlighted by a junior Megan Harris (Knoxville, Tenn.) double that scored freshman Katie Park (Scottsdale, Ariz.) and Mayer.
Virginia added three in the fourth innings, when Hughes singled home Chapdelaine before Mayer doubled off the wall in left center to score junior Heidi Velk (Murrieta, Calif.) and Hughes.
In the sixth, the Cavaliers scored runs on two bases-loaded walks and a sacrifice fly before Mayer stepped up and launched her first home run of the season, a three-run shot to left, to finish off the game.
Chapdelaine (8-34) earned the win, allowing three runs in five innings of work with five strikeouts, while DiMartino took the loss, giving up eight earned runs in 4.1 innings of work.
Virginia concludes the season this weekend (April 26-27) with a three-game series at Boston College.
