CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – No. 3 seed Virginia defeated No. 6 seed Georgia Tech 4-1 in the quarterfinal round of the ACC Women’s Tennis Championship late Friday (April 25) at North Carolina’s Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.

Virginia improves to 19-5 overall and advances to the ACC Championship semifinals for the third consecutive year. Georgia Tech falls to 13-9.

The Cavaliers will play No. 2 seed Miami (19-4) in the semifinals on Saturday (April 26) at Cary Tennis Park.

“It was nice to just get the match started,” Virginia head coach Mark Guilbeau. “After waiting that long, and I think the girls would agree, it was nice to play a great match. I thought the doubles was about as strong as we played in about two months.”

The 3 p.m. start time for the Virginia-Georgia Tech match was pushed back five hours to 8 p.m. and played indoors due to inclement weather in Cary.

Virginia claimed the doubles point with wins at Nos. 3 and 2. Sophomores Maci Epstein (Winter Park, Fla.) and Danielle Collins (St. Petersburg, Fla.) beat Alexa Anton-Ohlmeyer and Rasheeda McAdoo 8-2 on court three. The Cavaliers claimed the point with an 8-3 win from No. 13 Julia Elbaba (Oyster Bay, N.Y.) and Rachel Pierson (Princeton, N.J.) over Natasha Prokhnevska and Muriel Wacker on court two. Stephanie Nauta (Galveston, Texas) and Li Xi(Kunming, China) trailed 6-5 against No. 6 Kendal Woodard and Megan Kurey on court six when the point was clinched.

Georgia Tech tied the score at 1-1 with Wacker’s 6-4, 6-4 win over Epstein on court five. Caryssa Peretz(Cherry Hill, N.J.) gave the Cavaliers a 2-1 lead with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Anton-Ohlmeyer on court six. No. 69 Pierson rallied for a 0-6, 6-1, 6-1 win over Prokhnevska on court four and No. 4 Elbaba clinched the win with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Woodard on court one.

First serve for Virginia’s semifinal match against Miami is set for 2 p.m. The Cavaliers look to avenge a 5-2 loss to the Hurricanes in the regular-season finale. Live scoring will be available at VirginiaSports.com.

Notes: Virginia improved to 21-12 all-time vs. Georgia Tech, including a 3-0 in the ACC Championship. The Cavaliers lost 4-3 to Florida State in last year’s semifinals.
