McCarthy Ties for Second at ACC Championships

New London, N.C. – Virginia junior men’s golfer Denny McCarthy (Rockville, Md.) used a final round score of 5-under 67 to tie for second at the ACC Championships at the Old North State Club in New London, N.C. McCarthy’s effort helped Virginia improve to a fifth-place finish at 2-under 862. Georgia Tech claimed the team title with a 54-hole score of 25-under 839. Florida State was second at 845 while Clemson was third at 851.
McCarthy’s 54-hole total was 7-under 209. He opened the tournament with back-to-back rounds of 1-under 71. It was McCarthy’s second top-five finish at the ACC Championships. He placed fourth in 2012, also shooting 7-under 209. McCarthy, ranked No. 16 nationally by Golfstat, posted his sixth top-five finish this season in 10 tournament appearances.
Virginia shot 12-under 276 during Sunday’s final round to tie its lowest 18-hole score in ACC Tournament history.
UVa senior Ben Rusch (Weinfelden, Switzerland) equaled McCarthy’s final-round effort, also shooting 5-under 67, to pull off a top-10 finish. The 2012 ACC individual champion, Rusch tied for ninth at 3-under 213.
Ji Soo Park (Clifton, Va.), UVa’s top finisher at last year’s ACC Championship, was 31st overall at 4-over 220. He carded a final round score of 70. David Pastore (Greenwich, Conn.) was 35th at 22 and Derek Bard (New Hartford, N.Y.) was 43rd at 224. Patore finished with a 73 while Bard ended the tournament with a 72.
Georgia Tech’s Ollie Schniederjans took home medalist honors by shooting 12-under 204. He finished five strokes ahead of McCarthy and teammate Anders Albertson, the 2013 ACC champion.
The fifth-ranked Yellow Jackets victory was their 13th ACC title.
