Cavalier Golfers Tumble to Ninth Place at NCAA Regional

Columbia, Mo. – The No. 11 Virginia men’s golf team will face an uphill climb if it is to earn a berth to this year’s NCAA Championships. After finishing the opening day of play at the NCAA Regional in Columbia, Mo., in third place, the Cavaliers fell back to ninth after Friday’s second round. UVa shot 15-over 303 for a two-day total of 12-over 588.
The top five teams from the regional site advance to the NCAAs. UVa will enter Saturday’s final round 12 strokes behind fifth-place Arizona State.
Senior Denny McCarthy (Rockville, Md.) led Virginia during the second round with a score of 1-over 73. His two-round total of 2-under 142 has him situated in 13th place on the leaderboard along with teammate David Pastore (Greenwich, Conn.). Pastore recorded a round of 74 on Friday.
A trio of UVa players shot 6-over 78 during the second round. That group included Ji Soo Park (Clifton, Va.), Derek Bard (New Hartford, N.Y.) and Jimmy Stanger (Tampa, Fla.). Bard is in 44th place at 150, Park is 60th at 154 and Stanger is 66th at 157.
Arkansas, ranked No. 24, shot a blazing 18-under 270 to tie second-ranked Oklahoma State at 559 for the tournament lead. Host school Missouri is in third place at 561 while LSU is fourth at 575 and Arizona State is fifth at 576.
Missouri’s Hunter Kraus takes a one-stroke lead into the final round at 7-under 137.
The Cavaliers will start their final round at 7:30 a.m. CT from the No. 10 tee while paired with San Diego State and Iowa.
