Hutchinson, Kan. – Virginia junior golfer Denny McCarthy (Rockville, Md.) will enter Monday’s final round of play at the NCAA Championships tied for third place, just two shots behind the tournament leader. Due to weather delays over the past three days, the individual champion will be crowned after 54 holes instead of the original schedule of four rounds of competition.
The tournament is taking place at Prairie Dunes Country Club in Hutchinson, Kan.
McCarthy ended his second round tied with four other players for third place at 4-under 136. He played 32 holes on Saturday and completed his second round Sunday morning, shooting 1-over 71.
Stanford’s Cameron Wilson leads the field at 6-under 134, one shot ahead of teammate Patrick Rodgers. Tied with McCarthy for third place are Georgia State’s Davin White, Oklahoma State’s Talor Gooch, Georgia Tech’s Ollie Schniederjans and Oklahoma’s Charlie Saxon.
McCarthy is schedule to start his final round at 3:10 p.m. ET from the first tee.
The final round of the tournament will be broadcast live by The Golf Channel starting at 5 p.m. ET. The network’s Golf Central pregame show will air starting at 2 p.m. ET.
McCarthy, ranked No. 16 in the latest Golfstat rankings, is one of six at-large individuals who are not competing with schools that earned a berth in to the 30-team field from the regional championships. Last year he finished 22nd while competing as an individual.
