Virginia Opens Season with 3-1 Win over Illinois-Chicago

HUNTINGTON, W.Va.-The Virginia volleyball team opened the 2014 season with a 25-20, 24-26, 25-18, 25-23 victory over Illinois-Chicago on the first day of the Marshall Thunder Invitational Friday night (Aug. 29).
The Cavaliers out-hit the Flames, .227-.115, and out-blocked UIC, 13-4. Junior middle hitter Natalie Bausback (Carlsbad, Calif.) hit .438 with nine kills while matching a career high with nine blocks.
Junior outside hitter Kayla Sears (Moorpark, Calif.) and sophomore outside Jasmine Burton (White Hills, Calif.) recorded 13 and 12 kills, respectively, while senior outside Tori Janowski (Sterling, Va.) added 13 digs, eight kills and seven blocks.
Junior setter Lauren Fuller (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) tallied a double-double with 33 assists and 10 digs, while sophomore defensive specialist Lexi Riccolo (Wheaton, Ill.) tied Janowski for the team lead with 13 digs.
The Cavaliers took a 1-0 advantage after hitting .353 in the first set, winning 25-20, but were limited to a .048 hitting percentage in the second, falling 26-24.
Virginia hit .280 and .290 in the third and fourth sets compared to UIC’s .042 and .118, and took the frames, 25-18 and 25-23.
Kara Johnson led the Flames with 18 kills.
The Cavaliers conclude the Marshall Thunder Invitational Saturday (Aug. 30) when they face Eastern Michigan at 1 p.m. and Marshall at 7 p.m.
