Cavaliers Down LIU Brooklyn, 3-1, in Home Opener

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.-The Virginia volleyball team defeated LIU Brooklyn, 22-25, 25-17, 25-21, 25-22, in its home opener Friday evening (Sept. 5). The match concluded action on the first day of the Cavalier Classic, which also includes Alabama and Navy.
With the win, Virginia (4-0) has won its first four matches to start a season for the first time since 2010, when UVa won its first five.
The Cavaliers had three hitters record 15 kills or more, including junior Kayla Sears (Moorpark, Calif.), who had 21 kills and three aces. Sophomore Jasmine Burton (White Hills, Calif.) hit .448 with 16 kills, while junior Natalie Bausback (Carlsbad, Calif.) hit .500 with 15 kills and four blocks.
Junior Lauren Fuller (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) dished out 56 assists, while sophomores Lexi Riccolo (Wheaton, Ill.) and Karlie Suber (Mechanicsville, Va.) added 19 and 15 digs, respectively.
In the first set, the Blackbirds hit .417 while holding the Cavaliers to a .163 hitting percentage on the way to a 25-22 victory. LIU hit the same .417 in the second set, but UVa hit .593 with 17 kills against one error and claimed the frame, 25-17.
The Cavaliers won the third, 25-21, in a set that saw seven ties. UVa recorded its first four blocks in the set and held LIU to a .167 hitting percentage. Virginia never trailed in the fourth and went on to win, 25-22, to close out the match.
Tamara Ignjic hit .436 with 19 kills to lead LIU Brooklyn.
The Cavaliers return to action Saturday (Sept. 6) when they face Navy at 10 a.m. and Alabama at 7 p.m. Fans attending the Virginia football game against Richmond can bring their ticket stub for free admission (based on availability).
