Virginia Drops Five-Set Matches to Loyola Chicago, Youngstown State

EVANSTON, Ill.–The Virginia volleyball team dropped a pair of five-set matches on the first day of the Wildcat Classic Friday (Sept. 12). The Cavaliers (6-2) were defeated by Youngstown State, 3-2, after falling to Loyola Chicago, 3-2, earlier in the day.
The Cavaliers fought off three match points against the Penguins, but YSU was victorious, 25-20, 22-25, 20-25, 25-22 and 18-16.
Junior Natalie Bausback (Carlsbad, Calif.) hit .533 with 18 kills to lead four Cavaliers in double-digit kills, including senior Tori Janowski (Sterling, Va.) with 17, junior Kayla Sears (Moorpark, Calif.) with 13 and sophomore Jasmine Burton (White Hills, Calif.) with 11.
Junior Lauren Fuller (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) added a double-double with 54 assists and 13 digs, while sophomore Lexi Riccolo (Wheaton, Ill.) led the squad with 25 digs and senior Morgan Blair (Long Valley, N.J.) had a match-high eight blocks.
Lexi Egler led the Penguins with 22 kills and 14 digs.
In the first match of the day, the Cavaliers dropped their first match of the season, 21-25, 26-24, 25-20, 23-25 and 15-11, to Loyola Chicago.
After four mostly even sets, the Ramblers (4-3) jumped out to an 8-2 lead in the final frame before UVa closed the gap to two at 13-11. Loyola then earned the next two points to take the match.
Burton led UVa with 21 kills on .459 hitting, while sophomore Haley Kole (Tallahassee, Fla.) added 19 kills. Bausback recorded a match-high eight blocks. Freshman Haley Fauntleroy (Winnetka, Ill.) made her collegiate debut and had five kills on 10 attempts out of the middle.
Morgan Reardon led the Ramblers with 22 kills.
The Cavaliers close out the Wildcat Classic Saturday (Sept. 13), when they face host Northwestern at 8 p.m. Eastern.
