Cavaliers Open Fall Season in Fourth Place at Cougar Classic

Sept. 14, 2014 Hanahan, S.C. – The Virginia women’s golf team opened its season by completing the first round of the 12th annual Powerade Cougar Classic tied for fourth at even par 288. Wake Forest leads the 23-team field at 6-under 282. The tournament is taking place at Yeamans Hall Club in Hanahan, S.C.
Virginia was led by sophomore Lauren Diaz-Yi (Thousand Oaks, Calif.), who shot a career-best 3-under 69 to be tied for third overall after the first 18 holes. Briana Mao (Folsom, Calif.), Lauren Coughlin (Chesapeake, Va.) and Elizabeth Szokol (Winnetka, Ill.), all tied for 31st for UVa at 1-over 73. A transfer from Northwestern, Szokol is playing in her first tournament as a Cavalier. Freshman Lyberty Anderson (Chesterfield, Va.). shot 76 and is in 66th place.
Wake Forest’s Sierra Sims posted a tournament record 7-under 65 to take a three-shot lead into the second round.
