UVa Golfers Finish Sixth at Primland Collegiate

Sept. 30, 2014 Meadows of Dan, Va. – The No. 10 Virginia men’s golf team finished sixth in the nine-team field at the inaugural Primland Collegiate Invitational in Meadows of Dan, Va. The Cavaliers shot 11-under 277 during Tuesday’s final round of competition for a 54-hole total of 19-under 845.
Wake Forest, the host school, won the tournament at the Primland Resort by shooting 38-under 826. The No. 21 Demon Deacons held off No. 12 Auburn by one shot. Penn State was third at 26-under 838.
Virginia was led by sophomore Jimmy Stanger (Tampa, Fla.) who finished 15th at 6-under 210. He posted a final round score of 5-under 67, matching his second-round effort. His tournament score bettered his previous low 54-hole total by two strokes. It marked the second time this fall Stanger has led the Cavaliers in scoring. He was UVa’s top finisher at the season-opening Northern Intercollegiate.
Nick McLaughlin (New Castle, N.H.) and Derek Bard (New Hartford, N.Y.) tied for 18th place at 5-under 211. McLaughlin shot a career low round of 67 Tuesday and also bettered his previous best 54-hole total by six shots. Bard posted a final round tally of 72.
Kyle Kochevar (Glen Ellyn, Ill.) was 30th overall at 216 and Denny McCarthy (Rockville, Md.) placed 33rd at 217. Both players shot even par 72 during the final round. Kochevar’s finish, tournament score and final-round effort of 1-under 71 were all career bests.
North Carolina’s William Register took medalist honors by shooting 17-under 199.
The Cavaliers have the weekend off before competing at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate on Oct. 10-12 in Johnson City, Tenn.
