CHARLOTTESVILLE – Main draw play of the 2014 ITA Atlantic Regional began Friday at the Snyder Tennis Center and featured three Virginia doubles teams advancing to the round of 16. The Cavaliers will have five singles players and three doubles teams in action Saturday.
All three Virginia doubles teams had a first round bye before posting second round wins on Friday. The third-seeded team of Mac Styslinger (Birmingham, Ala.) and Henrik Wiersholm (Kirkland, Wash.) recorded an 8-4 win over Igor Braga and Dominik Pascal of Norfolk State in the second round. Fifth-seeded Luca Corinteli (Alexandria, Va.) and Ryan Shane (Falls Church, Va.) topped Alex Aleman and Adam Blasinsky of Duquesne, 8-2, in their second round match. Thai-Son Kwiatkowski (Charlotte, N.C.) and Jonathan Cornish (London, England), a No. 9-16 seed, edged Pierre Brondeau and Mike Fallone of Saint Joseph’s in the second round, 8-7(2).
In singles, Cornish posted suffered a three-set loss to Maxi Branth of James Madison in Friday’s first round. Second-seeded Shane, No. 6 Styslinger, No. 7 Kwiatkowski, No. 9-16 Corinteli and No. 17-32 Wiersholm all received first round byes and will begin singles play at the event on Saturday.
Saturday’s play begins at 9 a.m. with the round of 16 of doubles, followed by the round of 64 and round of 32 singles. Admission to the tournament is free at the Snyder Tennis Center. In case of inclement weather, play will be moved indoors to the Boar’s Head Sports Club.
