CHARLOTTESVILLE – Play at the 2014 ITA Atlantic Regional continued Saturday at the Snyder Tennis Center. Virginia had four singles players reach the round of 16 and one doubles teams advance to the quarterfinals during the third day of the tournament.
Four Cavaliers posted a pair of singles wins Saturday to reach the round of 16. Second-seeded Ryan Shane (Falls Church, Va.), sixth-seeded Mac Styslinger (Birmingham, Ala.) and seventh-seeded Thai-Son Kwiatkowski (Charlotte, N.C.) each recorded two straight-set wins. No. 9-16 seed Luca Corinteli (Alexandria, Va.) had a straight set win in the round of 64 before having a three-set win in the round of 32. First-year Henrik Wiersholm (Kirkland, Wash.), a No. 17-32 seed, won his first match of the day before falling the top seed, Amerigo Contini of Virignia Tech, in the round of 32.
Virginia had three doubles teams competing in the round of 16, but only one advanced to the quarterfinals. Fifth-seeded Shane and Corinteli posted an 8-1 win over the Penn State duo of Alex Fennell and Matt Barry to reach the quarterfinals, while third-seeded Styslinger and Wiersholm and No. 9-16 seeded Kwiatkowski and Jonathan Cornish (London, England) suffered round of 16 losses.
Sunday’s play begins at 10:30 a.m. with the quarterfinals of doubles, followed by the round of 16 of singles. Admission to the tournament is free at the Snyder Tennis Center. In case of inclement weather, play will be moved indoors to the Boar’s Head Sports Club.
