Three Cavaliers Reach ITA Atlantic Regional Quarterfinals

CHARLOTTESVILLE – Three members of the Virginia men’s tennis team advanced to the quarterfinals of the ITA Atlantic Regional during Sunday’s action at the Snyder Tennis Center. Ryan Shane (Falls Church, Va.), Thai-Son Kwiatkowski (Charlotte, N.C.) and Luca Corinteli (Alexandria, Va.) recorded singles wins to advance, while the pair of Shane and Corinteli also reached the doubles semifinals.
Second-seeded Shane reached the quarterfinals with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Jacob Dunbar of Richmond. He will play fifth-seeded Andreas Bjerrehus of Virginia Tech on Monday. Seventh-seeded Kwiatkowski downed Nick Bybel of Bucknell, 6-2, 6-2, to set up a quarterfinal match with fourth-seeded Carlos Lopez Villa of Old Dominion. Corinteli, a No. 9-16 seed, defeated Christian Cargill of William & Mary, 6-4, 6-2, and will play eighth-seeded Francisco Dias of George Washington in the quarterfinals. Sixth-seeded Mac Styslinger (Birmingham, Ala.) was upset in the round of 16, falling to Florant Nicoud of Virginia Tech, 4-6, 7-5, 6-4.
In doubles, the team of Shane and Corinteli advanced to the semifinals. The fifth-seeded Cavalier duo posted an 8-5 win over the Penn State team of Roman Trkulja and Aws Laaribi in the quarterfinals. The Cavalier duo will play fourth-seeded Leo Stakhovsky and Mike Reilly in the semifinals.
Monday’s play begins at 10 a.m. with the quarterfinals and semifinals of singles, followed by the semifinals of doubles. Admission to the tournament is free at the Snyder Tennis Center. In case of inclement weather, play will be moved indoors to the Boar’s Head Sports Club.
