Shane and Kwiatkowski Advance on Day One of National Indoors

FLUSHING, N.Y. – The Virginia men’s tennis team had two singles players advance to the round of 16 of the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships on Thursday at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. Junior Ryan Shane (Falls Church, Va.) and sophomore Thai-Son Kwiatkowski (Charlotte, N.C.) recorded victories on the opening day of the final fall tournament of the year.
Shane opened the tournament with a 5-7, 7-6(5), 6-3 victory over Jared Hiltzik of Illinois, who is ranked No. 6 nationally in the preseason ITA singles rankings. He will play the top seed, ITA All-American singles champion Sebastian Stiefelmeyer of Louisville, in the round of 16.
Kwiatkowski posted a 7-5, 6-3 first-round victory over Tom Fawcett of Stanford. In the round of 16, he will play Nathan Pasha of Georgia, who upset fifth-seeded Romain Bogaerts of Wake Forest in the opening round.
In doubles, Shane and sophomore Luca Corinteli (Alexandria, Va.) received a first round bye before falling second-ranked Tim Kopinski and Roos Guignon of Illinois in the second round, 6-3, 6-3. Shane and Corinteli will have a match in the consolation draw on Friday.
The tournament will continue Friday and run through Sunday at the home of the US Open.
