Brian, Colaprico and Doniak Named Hermann Trophy Semifinalists

CHARLOTTESVILLE – Virginia senior midfielders Morgan Brian (St. Simons Island, Ga.) and Danielle Colaprico (Freehold, N.J.) and junior forward Makenzy Doniak (Chino Hills, Calif.) were named semifinalists for the 2014 Missouri Athletic Club’s Hermann Trophy, the most prestigious individual award in college soccer. The 16 candidates were announced Tuesday by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.
Virginia is the first school to have three players recognized as Hermann Trophy semifinalists since 2008, when both the North Carolina women and Wake Forest men accomplished the feat.
Brian is the reigning MAC Hermann Trophy winner and is looking to become the first woman to receive the award in consecutive years since Christine Sinclair of Portland in 2004 and 2005. She has 10 goals and 13 assists, appearing in 16 games this season. She missed eight games because of international duty as she was the only collegiate player on the United States Women’s National Team for the CONCACAF World Cup Qualifying tournament in October. She is the leading scorer in this year’s NCAA Tournament with four goals and eight assists, including tying the NCAA Tournament single-game record with five assists in the 8-0 first-round victory over High Point.
Doniak is a semifinalist for the second consecutive year after leading the ACC in scoring. She has posted a school-record 49 points on 19 goals and 11 assists. In the 7-0 victory over Kentucky in the NCAA Tournament round of 16, she set the school record for points in a game with eight, recording her second career hat trick to go along with two assists. Doniak also had a seven-game goal-scoring streak this season, the second-longest streak in school history.
Colaprico is a semifinalist for the first time in her career as she leads the ACC in assists. Her 18 assists are a single-season school record and the most by an ACC player since 2007. The 2014 ACC Midfielder of the Year, Colaprico has also posted career-highs of six goals and 30 points this season. She holds the Virginia career records for assists (43) and appearances (98).
Fans will once again be able to vote for the award this year, along with NSCAA member coaches. Fans can make their choice by visiting the MAC Hermann Trophy Website. The three finalists for the award will be announced on December 12. The winners will be announced at the awards banquet at the Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis on January 9.
The Cavaliers are making their second consecutive trip to the NCAA Women’s College Cup and will play Texas A&M Friday in a national semifinal in Boca Raton, Fla. Game time at FAU Stadium is 5 p.m. and the game will be televised on ESPNU.
