CHARLOTTESVILLE – The Virginia women’s soccer team had four players named All-Americans Friday by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA). Senior midfielder Morgan Brian (St. Simons Island, Ga.) and junior forward Makenzy Doniak (Chino Hills, Calif.) were named to the first team, senior midfielder Danielle Colaprico (Freehold, N.J.) was named to the second team and junior defender Emily Sonnett (Marietta, Ga.) was named to the third team.
The four selections are a Virginia record, eclipsing the three selections last season. It is also the fourth time in history that Virginia has had a pair of first-team honorees (Amanda Cromwell and Andrea Rubio in 1991, Nikki Krzysik and Becky Sauerbrunn in 2007, Brian and Doniak in 2013). The Cavaliers were tied with UCLA for the most NSCAA All-Americans this year with four.
Brian becomes the first Cavalier to be named a first-team All-American three times, having also earned the honor in 2011 and 2013. She has 10 goals and 13 assists this season, appearing in 16 games. Brian missed eight games because of international duty as she was the only collegiate player on the United States Women’s National Team for the CONCACAF World Cup Qualifying tournament in October. The reigning MAC Hermann Trophy winner is the leading scorer in this year’s NCAA Tournament with four goals and eight assists, including tying the NCAA Tournament single-game record with five assists in the 8-0 first-round victory over High Point.
Doniak earns first-team honors for the second consecutive year and becomes the fifth player in UVa history to garner first-team honors twice. She leads the ACC in scoring, posting a school-record 49 points on 19 goals and 11 assists. In the 7-0 victory over Kentucky in the NCAA Tournament round of 16, she set the school record for points in a game with eight, recording her second career hat trick to go along with two assists. Doniak also had a seven-game goal-scoring streak this season, the second-longest streak in school history.
Colaprico, who earned third-team honors last season, becomes Virginia’s 12th player to be a multiple-time All-American. She leads the ACC in assists with 18, a single-season school record and the most by an ACC player since 2007. The 2014 ACC Midfielder of the Year, Colaprico has also posted career-highs of six goals and 30 points this season. She holds the Virginia career records for assists (43) and appearances (98).
Sonnett earns All-America honors for the first time, becoming the 22nd player in Virginia history to be named an All-American. She has anchored a Cavalier defense that has recorded a 0.58 goals against average, posted 12 shutouts and allowed just 5.4 shots per game this season. Offensively, Sonnett has contributed four goals and three assists.
The Cavaliers are making their second consecutive trip to the NCAA Women’s College Cup and will play Texas A&M tonight in a national semifinal in Boca Raton, Fla. Game time at FAU Stadium is 5 p.m. and the game will be televised on ESPNU.
