CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.-Virginia volleyball head coach Dennis Hohenshelt announced the Cavaliers’ 2014 schedule Wednesday (May 14), which will feature 12 home matches, including one tournament at Memorial Gymnasium.
The 2014 campaign will see UVa face seven teams that competed in the 2013 NCAA Championship, including three conference champions in Duke (ACC), LIU Brooklyn (Northeast) and Louisville (American).
The Cavaliers will play an 18-match ACC schedule, which includes home-and-away contests against Clemson, Duke, Virginia Tech and conference newcomer Louisville.
“We tried to upgrade the schedule this year to raise our RPI with the four non-conference weekends,” UVa head coach Dennis Hohenshelt said. “I think our ACC schedule is very competitive and no matter who you have to play twice is going to be difficult.”
Virginia opens the season with the Thunder Invitational hosted by Marshall Aug. 29-30 in Huntington, W.V. The Cavaliers will face Illinois-Chicago, Eastern Michigan and the host Thundering Herd.
The Cavaliers will host the Cavalier Classic at Memorial Gymnasium Sept. 5-6. UVa’s home opener will be against LIU Brooklyn on Sept. 5 at 7 p.m., while the other two teams competing in the tourney will be Alabama and Navy.
Virginia then heads on the road for two tournaments, first to the Wildcat Challenge Sept. 12-13 in Evanston, Ill., where UVa will face Loyola (Chicago), Youngstown State and host Northwestern. The following weekend, Sept. 19-20, the Cavaliers will play Ball State, East Tennessee State and VCU in a tourney hosted by the Rams in Richmond, Va.
After a mid-week contest at Liberty on Sept. 23, the Cavaliers open ACC play with four home matches against Clemson (Sept. 26), Wake Forest (Sept. 27), Duke (Oct. 3) and Louisville (Oct. 4).
“The ACC is going to be very good this year and those four home games right off the bat will set the tempo for conference play,” Hohenshelt said. “I’m excited that we got those first two weekends at home, especially since we are away the two previous weekends. It is four really good opponents, so the fact that we get to sleep in our own beds and have our normal routine, we will have a great opportunity to set the standard for the rest of the season.”
Virginia also welcomes NC State (Oct. 24), Notre Dame (Oct. 25), Virginia Tech (Nov. 14) and Georgia Tech (Nov. 21), while the Cavaliers’ final home match will be Nov. 23 against Pittsburgh.
UVa closes out the season on the road at Boston College (Nov. 26) and Syracuse (Nov. 28).
The Cavaliers return five starters from last season’s squad that finished 18-14 overall and 11-9 in ACC play after recording a 9-22 overall record and 3-17 mark in conference play in 2012.
