Virginia Uses Big Innings to Defeat UTEP, 14-5

TEMPE, Ariz.-The Virginia softball team used two big innings to pick up its first win of the season, 14-5 over UTEP, Friday morning (Feb. 6) at the Tempe Sports Complex as part of the Kajikawa Classic.
The Cavaliers struck for six in the top of the second and for five runs in the third, highlighted by a grand slam to left by junior Aimee Chapdelaine (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) in the second and a third inning, three-run long ball by sophomore Madison Labshere (El Cajon, Calif.), her third home run of the young season. Chapdelaine finished 2-for-4 with a career-high five RBI, while Madison went 3-for-4 with 3 RBI.
Nine Cavaliers scored in the game, including freshmen Allison Davis (Oak Hill, Va.) and Danni Ingraham (Laguna Niguel, Calif.), who each scored three runs. Sophomore Kaitlin Fitzgerald (Placentia, Calif.) crossed the plate twice.
Freshman pitcher Andie Formby (Orange, Calif.) earned her first collegiate win (1-0), allowing five runs in 3.1 innings pitched. Fellow Freshmen Alex Formby (Orange, Calif.) and Davis combined for 1.2 innings of relief with no runs allowed.
Kaitlin Fifield (0-1) gave up 11 runs in 2.1 innings pitched for UTEP.
The Cavaliers conclude action at the Kajikawa Classic Saturday (Feb. 7) when they play Utah Valley at 11 a.m. and Wisconsin at 1:30 p.m. Eastern.
