AMES, Iowa & ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – The Virginia men’s track and field team had athletes compete Friday at both the Iowa State Classic and Don Kirby Elite Meet. Sophomore Jordan Young (Windsor, Ontario) broke his own school record in weight throw at Iowa State to highlight the day for the Cavaliers.
We had two more school records for the men and we’ll take that knowing it is just the start of the weekend,” said head coach Bryan Fetzer. “We have a lot on the table to accomplish, but we had a positive start.”
Young had a mark of 74′ 2.25″ on his final attempt to finish second at the meet. The mark was almost four feet farther than his school-record performance at the Virginia Tech Invitational last month. The throw also moves Young into the top-five nationally in the event this season and continues a streak of the Cavaliers breaking a school record at every meet this year.
“This morning, we talked about someone making a spark to ignite the fire for the men’s team and I can’t think of a better spark than a school record and NCAA Top 5 throw from Jordan,” said Fetzer. “What a competition to go against the current NCAA record holder. The fun thing is he knows there is a lot more in to be gained going forward as he makes some corrections and continues to gain strength. Three out of six throws over his lifetime best is fantastic.”
Redshirt-freshman Thomas Madden (Front Royal, Va.) moved up to No. 2 on Virginia’s all-time list in the 5000m, crossing the line in Ames at 13.57.01. The time also broke the UVa freshman record he had set earlier this season. In the other heat of the race, first-year Brent Demarest (Charleston, S.C.) ran the third-fastest freshman time in school history, the eighth-fastest overall, at 14:14.74.
“Brent and Thomas had great races,” said Fetzer. “Under 14 minutes is a heck of a run for Thomas and I am proud of the overall effort they gave. They competed among great field and they are going to be a steady force for us down the road as both have just freshman eligibility.”
The Cavaliers will conclude action at both meets on Saturday.
