APEX, N.C.–The Virginia softball team fell to NC Central, 5-4, and Omaha, 9-3, Saturday afternoon (Feb. 14) on the final day of Eagle Challenge at Middle Creek Park.
The Cavaliers jumped on the Mavericks (5-4) quickly in the first inning of the second game, as freshman Allison Davis (Oak Hill, Va.) tripled down the right field line on the first pitch she saw and came home on a single by sophomore Kaitlin Fitzgerald (Placentia, Calif.).
Omaha took advantage of four UVa errors in the fourth inning, scoring seven runs to break the game open.
Freshman Danni Ingraham (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) hit a deep solo home run to center in the sixth and sophomore Madison Labshere (El Cajon, Calif.) singled in junior Aimee Chapdelaine (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) to conclude the scoring for UVa.
Maverick pitcher Jaylee Hinrichs (2-1) threw a complete game with six strikeouts to earn the win.
Freshman Andie Formby (Orange, Calif.) struck out a season-high seven, but took the loss, giving up just one earned run in 3.2 innings. Davis allowed two runs in 3.1 innings of relief.
The Cavaliers’ rally in the first game fell just short as they dropped a 5-4 decision to NC Central (1-2).
After falling behind 5-0 through three innings, the Cavaliers struck for two in the fourth on a two-run opposite-field home run by Ingraham.
Virginia cut the lead to one at 5-4 in the sixth, taking advantage of an Eagle error and a sacrifice fly by Labshere that scored Fitzgerald. UVa loaded the bases in the seventh, but were unable to score the tying run as Dominique Wilson (1-1) struck out Chapdelaine to end the game.
Davis (0-1) took the loss, allowing five runs (three earned) in 2.1 innings of work. Formby pitched three innings of scoreless relief. Wilson struck out eight in a complete-game win for NC Central.
The Cavaliers return to action next weekend when they compete in the Citrus Classic in Orlando, Fla., Feb. 20-22.
