Virginia Drops Two at Citrus Classic

ORLANDO, Fla.-The Virginia softball dropped two games on the first day of the Citrus Classic, 6-4 to Marist and 6-2 to Jacksonville State, Friday at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex.
In the first game, the Cavaliers (3-8) fell to Marist, 6-4, when the Red Foxes scored four in the bottom of the third to take the lead for good.
After falling behind 2-0 in the first, the Cavaliers struck for three in the top of the second. Freshman Allison Davis (Oak Hill, Va.) singled home sophomore Madison Labshere (El Cajon, Calif.) and freshman Lauren Heintzelman (Southlake, Texas) and came home on a Marist error.
Davis fell to 0-2 on the season after allowing six runs in 2.2 innings, while freshman Alex Formby (Orange, Calif.) pitched 3.1 innings of scoreless relief.
Marist pitcher Melanie White (1-0) earned the win, allowing four runs (two earned) in a complete game with four strikeouts.
In the second game, Jacksonville State scored four runs in the first two innings and the Cavaliers could not recover, falling 6-2.
Senior Megan Harris (Knoxville, Tenn.) drove in the Cavaliers’ two runs on a second-inning double to left that scored junior Aimee Chapdelaine (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) and sophomore Katie Park (Scottsdale, Ariz.).
Whitney Gillespie picked up the win for JSU after throwing 5.1 scoreless innings of relief with seven strikeouts. Freshman Andie Formby (Orange, Calif.) fell to 3-3 on the year, allowing four runs (three earned) in five innings.
The Cavaliers return to action Saturday when they face George Washington at 11 a.m. and Arkansas at 3 p.m.
