ORLANDO, Fla.-The Virginia softball team dropped its final two games at the Citrus Classic Sunday (Feb. 22) at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex. The Cavaliers (3-12) fell to Campbell, 5-2, before losing out to Elon, 8-6.
In the first game, the game was scoreless between UVa and Campbell (5-3) until the Camels took advantage of three Cavalier errors and scored five times in the inning. UVa’s runs came off of a sophomore Kaitlin Fitzgerald (Placentia, Calif.) RBI double in the sixth and a senior Megan Harris (Knoxville, Tenn.) sac fly in the seventh.
Freshman Andie Formby (Orange, Calif.) took the loss (3-5) in a complete game, giving up five unearned runs with four strikeouts.
Katie Baker (4-1) earned the win for the Camels, striking out four in seven innings with two earned runs.
In the second game, the Cavaliers scored in five of the first six innings, but two big innings was enough for Elon (5-4) to take the game, 8-6.
Junior Aimee Chapdelain (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) hit a two-run home run in the sixth, while freshman Danni Ingraham (Laguna Miguel, Calif.) and Harris hit solo home runs in the third and fifth, respectively.
Freshman Allison Davis (Oak Hill, Va.) started in the circle for UVa and allowed four runs in 3.1 innings, while fellow freshman Alex Formby (Orange, Calif.) gave up four in 2.2 innings of relief in the loss (0-5).
Elon’s Kendra Mitchum (4-2) earned the win, allowing three runs (one earned) in four innings of work.
The Cavaliers open up ACC play next weekend when they host Pitt Feb. 28-March 1. Saturday’s doubleheader is set for a 1 p.m. start, while Sunday’s single game is slated for a noon start.
