Young and DMR Earn All-American Honors at NCAA Indoor Championships

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The Virginia men’s track and field team had a strong first day of the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships at the Randal Tyson Track Complex on the campus of the University of Arkansas. Jordan Young (Windsor, Ontario) and the men’s distance medley relay both earn first-team All-America honors during Friday’s competition.

The Cavaliers end day one tied for sixth place with eight points. Five of the 17 events were scored Friday with the final 12 events to be scored Saturday.

“It’s one thing to participate in the NCAA meet, but to produce at the NCAA meet is another thing,” said head coach Bryan Fetzer. “To score points in both of our events tonight is impressive. Jordan was seeded fifth and finished fourth. The DMR was seeded 12th and finished sixth. That is what it is all about, performing at championships. It is a fun thing to look at the board and see Virginia in sixth place after day one. It is another step in the right direction.”

Young earned five points for the Cavaliers by finishing fourth in the weight throw. His mark of 22.87m (75-0.5) was just shy of his school-record 22.92m mark from the ACC Championships. It is the highest individual finish at the NCAA Indoor Championships by a Cavalier since 2010.

“Jordan had a great meet,” said Fetzer. “His first throw put him in good position and then had his best mark on his fifth.”

Virginia closed out the day by finishing sixth in the distance medley relay to score three points. The quartet of Henry Wynne (Westport, Conn.), Payton Hazzard (Huntington, N.Y.), Nathan Kiley (Chantilly, Va.) and Mike Marsella (Hope Valley, R.I.) crossed in a time of 9:33.24, the fourth-best time in school history.

“It was a complete team effort from the DMR,” said Fetzer. “Our last two legs had great splits. Those were some great runs by those guys and it made the difference in scoring points in the DMR.”

Virginia will have one more competitor at the meet on Saturday. Filip Mihaljevic (Livno, Bosnia and Herzegovina), the ACC champion in the shot put, will make his NCAA Indoor Championship debut. He is seeded ninth in the event as his season-best 19.63m is a school record. The shot put will begin at 6:30 p.m. CT.
