CHAPEL HILL, N.C.–The Virginia softball team dropped a doubleheader, 13-7 and 24-3, Saturday afternoon at Anderson Stadium.
The Cavaliers (7-18, 1-10 ACC) had six extra-base hits in the first game, but the Tar Heels (23-9, 8-2 ACC) came from behind and scored nine runs in the sixth to earn a 13-7 win.
In the top of the third, sophomore Iyana Hughes (Manteca, Calif.) doubled down the left-field line to drive in junior Amiee Chapdelaine (Pembroke Pines, Fla.) and freshman Allison Davis (Oak Hill, Va.) and give the Cavaliers a 2-0 lead.
After UNC tied the game on a two-run home run by Taylor Wike, the Cavaliers came right back and took the lead on a deep two-run long ball by freshman Lauren Heinztelman (Southlake, Texas), her second of the year.
In the fifth, Hughes, freshman Danni Ingraham (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) and senior Megan Harris (Knoxville, Tenn.) each hit doubles to put the Cavaliers ahead, 6-4. After UNC’s big inning in the sixth, Davis added a solo home run, her team-leading sixth of the year, in the seventh inning.
Kendra Lynch (5-0) earned the win, allowing three runs in three innings of relief, while Chapdelaine (1-1) took the loss, allowing four runs in two innings of relief.
In the second game, North Carolina used seven home runs to break open the game and go on to win, 24-3. Heintzelman singled home sophomore Kaitlin Fitzgerald (Placentia, Calif.) in the fourth, while Fitzgerald drove in Davis on a sacrifice fly and Harris drove in Hughes in the fifth for the Cavaliers’ three runs.
Freshman Alex Formby (Orange, Calif.) took the loss and fell to 1-10 on the season. Sydney Matzko (7-4) earned the win allowing three runs in five innings.
