CHARLOTTEVILLE, Va.–The Virginia softball team swept Western Carolina, 2-1 and 10-1, Tuesday (March 31) at The Park. Freshmen pitchers Alex and Andie Formby (Orange, Calif.) each threw a complete game for the Cavaliers (9-29).
In the first game, a sophomore Iyana Hughes (Manteca, Calif.) home run in the first inning and a freshman Allison Davis (Oak Hill, Va.) RBI single that scored junior Taylor Sarcone (Staten Island, N.Y.) in the fifth was all Andie Formby (6-14) needed, who allowed only three hits with four strikeouts in seven innings.
Jordan Garrett (8-10) allowed two runs with six strikeouts for the Catamounts (14-22) in the loss.
In the second game, 10 Cavaliers recorded hits, including two each by Hughes and sophomores Kaitlin Fitzgerald (Placentia, Calif.) and Katie Park (Scottsdale, Ariz.), in the 10-1 five-inning win.
The Cavaliers scored nine runs on eight hits in the first inning, highlighted by a two-run home run by freshman Lauren Heintzelman (Southlake, Texas), her third of the season. Park added her fourth home run of the season, a solo shot, in the second inning.
Alex Formby (2-10) allowed a run and three hits in the first inning, but only gave up four hits the rest of the way in a five-inning complete game win. Mallory Broome (1-2) took the loss for WCU.
Next up, the Cavaliers host Boston College this weekend (April 3-4). Friday’s doubleheader is set to begin at 5 p.m. and Saturday’s single game is slated for a noon start.
